The collection consists of photographs in various formats, both cased and without cases, and most date from the latter half of the nineteenth century. All depict white individuals. Except for Reaves, these individuals are unidentified. There are four portraits of apparently male individuals, six portraits of apparently female individuals, two photographs taken outdoors showing pairs of apparently female individuals, and one portrait showing one apparently male individual and one apparently female individual. In addition to three portraits of Reaves there are two photographs of his grave in the Marietta National Cemetery.
The photographs can be used for research on nineteenth century costume, hairstyles, and photographic processes and to document Reaves’ service in the American Civil War.
This collection is open to the public without restriction.
John H. Reaves was born circa 1840. He enlisted in the 98th Ohio Volunteer Infantry as a first sergeant on August 5, 1862. He was promoted to second lieutenant on January 1, 1863 and to first lieutenant and adjutant on May 25, 1864. He was killed at the Battle of Jonesboro, GA on September 1, 1864 and was buried in the Marietta National Cemetery in Marietta, GA.

The John H. Reaves Photographs Collection is a useful resource for researching nineteenth century costume, hairstyles, and photographic processes as well as documenting John H. Reaves’ service in the 98th Ohio Infantry Regiment during the American Civil War.
The collection contains ambrotypes, cartes de visites, daguerreotypes, paper prints, and tintypes depicting the appearance of several individuals, with most dating from the latter half of the nineteenth century.
