This collection consists of more than 11,000 positive and negative images produced by the Cooperative Extension Service and South Carolina Agricultural Experiment Station from the 1920s until the 1970s. A few images made before 1930 were not produced by the Service but were acquired and maintained with the collection. Many of the images appeared in publications issued by the Extension Service.
The bulk of images documents activities relating to agriculture; the remainder relates to economic development, home demonstration, and Clemson College. Pictures of Extension Service personnel are included in this series.
The images are arranged by subject according to a system developed by the photographers. The general categories of this system are as follows: agricultural economics, agricultural engineering, agronomy, dairying, entomology, Experiment Station, 4-H, general, home demonstration, horticulture, livestock, marketing, Negro work, and poultry. The classification system follows this description.
The names of all categories above were originally written on envelopes which contained the photographs; however, the original subject classification, which accompanied the photographs, does not reflect all of these categories. The original subject classification may be found in the first folder.
For purposes of preservation, the prints and negatives have been removed from their original kraft paper envelopes and have been photocopied. These photocopies provide information relating to the subject category, the county in which the photo was made, date of the photograph, name of photographer, and name of the Extension worker.
Principal photographers were L. W. "Lew" Riley and J. K. "Ken" Eargle. Although photographers were not identified for all images, other photographers whose work is represented include Ed Baskin, Clyde Belk, T. O. Bowen, J. D. Brown, F. W. Cannon, G. G. Daniel, Jr., Ed Davis, A. L. Durant, L. C. Hamilton, E. C. Hunton, L. W. Johnson, [ ?] Knobloch, Bill Law, Stan V. Lewis, Dan McManus,W. J. Martin, J. W. Matthews, [ ? ] Morgan, John G. Nowell, C. G.
