Scope and Contents

This collection contains 39 cassette tapes and one letter sized box of manuscript materials which document interviews and research conducted in the mid 1980s by Joseph C. Ellers for his book Getting To Know Clemson University Is Quite An Education: Determination Makes Dreams Come True. The interviews commonly follow a pattern of discussing the education of the interviewee, how they came to be at Clemson, and general recollections of changes within the departments they were affiliated with while employed at the University. The manuscript materials contain early drafts and research notes. The recordings include interviews with: Luther P. Anderson, Carl Boyd, Bob Bradley, Herbert Brantley, Stephen Chapman, H. Morris Cox, Walter Cox, Harvey Gantt, Willie C. Godley, Gordon Gray, Trescott Newton Hinton, James Cleveland Hite, Victor Hurst, Geraldine Labecki, Harlan McClure, William H. Davis McGregor, George M. Moore, Stanley Gosanko Nicholas, Wayne O'Dell, Judge Matthew Perry, Linvil G. Rich, Gilbert C. Robinson, Corrine Sawyer, Arnold E. Schwartz, Taze L. Senn, Virginia Shanklin, Lawrence V. Starkey, Wallace Trevillian, Joe Turner, Kenneth N. Vickery, Henry E. Vogel, William L. Watkins, Byron K. "Bud" Webb, Melford A. Wilson, and Thomas B. Yandle.

Biographical / Historical

Joseph C Ellers was born on September 15, 1959 in Morgantown, West Virginia, the son of John C. and Kathy L. Ellers. He was a graduate of D.W. Daniel high school and attended Clemson University and Southern Wesleyan.

Active in both state and national politics, Ellers served as the city of Clemson's Investigative Council Staff Director (1975-1976); Administrative Aide to State Representative Ed Simpson in 1977; national campaign staffer to President Gerald Ford in 1976; James B. Edwards Gubernatorial campaign in 1974; and senatorial campaigns for Strom Thurmond in 1978 and 1984. In 1981 he was appointed as the City Administrator of Central, SC, serving in that capacity until 1983.

In business, Ellers successfully worked with and founded several companies and marketing firms. In 1980, he helped to found Key Micrographics, Inc., which was a microfilm service bureau. With Nord Communications, a video production company in Greenville, SC, Ellers served as Executive Vice President and directed all creative service activities. Ellers currently (2009) operates his own firm, Consulting Associates, who specialize in training for sales management, customer service, marketing and sales leadership.

Writer and professional consultant Joseph C. Ellers conducted a series of research interviews in the mid 1980s for his book "Getting To Know Clemson University Is Quite An Education: Determination Makes Dreams Come True."

The interviews focus on key events that shaped the progress and development of Clemson University during the presidency of Robert C. Edwards (1958-1979).
