As a graduate student working in the Clemson University Libraries Special Collections, Mr. McKown collected these photographs while creating an exhibit, mounted in the Robert M. Cooper Library, in 1988. Textile manufacturing operations at Orr, Newry, Piedmont Manufacturing, Equinox, Gluck, Pelzer Cotton Mill, Chiquola, Abney, and Appleton are featured. Common scenes depicted include picnics, aerial shots, team sports, mill building exteriors, mill workers (operatives, executives, and overseers), and building interiors which include textile equipment and machinery. The photograph depictions date from originals at the Pendleton District Historical, Recreational, and Tourism Commission. A comparatively small number were made utilizing materials from Special Collections at Clemson University.
If use is for publication, permission for reproduction must be sought from both the Pendleton District Historical, Recreational and Tourism Commission, along with Special Collections at Clemson University.
Bryan McKown received a degree from Furman University, and later received an MA in History from Clemson University in 1988. He worked as an archivist for the Liberty Corporation in the early 1990s; later he became an archivist for the South Carolina Department of Archives and History.
