Scope and Contents

The collection consists of Daniel A.J. Sullivan's Congressional Medal of Honor "Tiffany Cross", three documents pertaining to the Medal and documentation of the awarding of a United Daughters of the Confederacy Cross of Military Service. In addition to the Tiffany Cross, the Medal of Honor material consists of two unsigned, undated printed copies of the citation, one on the letterhead of The Secretary of the Navy and one bearing an embossed color illustration of the Navy Medal of Honor as well as a photocopy of a photograph of a montage consisting of the citation letter signed by Josephus Daniel, Secretary of the Navy, the Medal of Honor and a photograph of Ensign Sullivan.

The Cross of Military Service material consists of the certificate awarding the Cross to Sullivan; a photograph of a montage consisting of the certificate, the Cross, Sullivan's obituary and a photograph of Sullivan; a photocopy of a June 18, 1941 Seneca Journal article and photograph concerning the presentation of the award to the John C. Calhoun Chapter of the United Daughters of the Confederacy; a brief history of the Cross of Service; an order form for a replica Cross; and a photocopy of a typed summary of Sullivan's Medal of Honor achievement which gives the date of the citation as November 11, 1920.

Biographical Note

Daniel A. J. Sullivan was born July 31, 1884 in Charleston, South Carolina. He attended Clemson Agricultural College and was a private in Company A of the Cadet Corps. In June, 1902, Sullivan graduated from Clemson with a Mechanical [Engineering] degree. An Ensign in the U. S. Naval Reserve Force in World War I, he was given the Medal of Honor for extraordinary heroism as an officer of the U.S.S. Christabel [Destroyer] on May 21, 1918. This award was given on November 11, 1920. He died in New York on January 29, 1941 and is buried in Arlington National Cemetery.
