Scope and Contents

The collection consists of a microfilm publication containing a foreword, an autobiographical sketch of William Bion MacWhirter, an index, a list of references, a preface, three "chapters" with information about the MacWhirter family in Ireland and Scotland and then family histories, family group charts (A to I, A-1, B-1, C-1), articles, book excerpts, correspondence, clippings, notes and photographs all relating to the genealogy of the MacWhirter and Whatley families. There is also genealogical information about related families such as the Bellord, Bolt, Clemencon, Clark, Crombie, Findley, Geer, Gillespie, Gwinn, Hames, Heller, Shell, and Stevenson families.

Biographical Note

William Bion MacWhirter was born June 3, 1916 in Jacksonville, FL, son of James Candler and Laura Edna Stevenson MacWhirter. He graduated from Duke University in 1936 with a degree in mathematics. He married Letitia Clemencon Bellord Whateley on February 22, 1941; they had seven daughters. He was employed as a rodman-transitman for the Southern Railway Company from 1936-1939, as an aircraft engineer from 1939-1946 and as a building contractor and engineer in Grand Rapids, MI, from 1946-1972. He retired in 1972.
