 Collection — Box: 1
Identifier: Mss-0209

Scope and Contents

The collection consists of a transmittal letter, minutes of meetings, a journal of proceedings and publications. The 1947 letter tansferring the collection to the Libraries is from Dr. Robert F. Poole, president of Clemson University. Minutes include those of the A.B.C. Farmers Club for the period 1846-1848; from the Beech Island Agricultural Club for 1856-1862 (the first nine pages of this period are missing, although it forms the bulk of the collection); and minutes from 1872-1874. Some of the subjects covered by the minutes pertain to the best method of preparing land and planting cotton; the best mode of cultivating corn; the importance of planting a pea crop, a turnip crop and small grain; ways of making and utilizing manure; the importance of raising ones own meat and what livestock to raise; and the housing and management of negroes. The journal of proceedings contains the rules of the Beech Island Agricultural and Police Society which was organized June 28, 1851, for "the promotion and improvement of Agriculture and Rural Economy, and the pursuing of a united and systematic plan with respect to the regulation of the colored population." There are four publications in the collection: extracts of minutes from the proceedings of an 1885 Beech Island (S.C.) Farmers' Club meeting entitled Losses and Savings on Cotton; remarks of Major Harry Hammond to the same group in 1886 entitled South Carolina and Agriculture: the state in its relations to agriculture; The Improvement of the Savannah River, also by Harry Hammond, consisted of remarks delivered to the Savannah River Valley Association in 1888; and Public Roads of South Carolina, which was published in 1889.

Historical Note

The Beech Island Agricultural Society was founded by planters from the Beech Island area (Beech Island borders the South Carolina side of the Savannah River and is more than 150 miles inland). The purpose of the Society, which was known under various names during the course of its existence, was to address issues of interest to local farmers. From 1845-1848, the Society was known as the A.B.C. Farmers' Club; in 1851 it seems to have been organized as the Beech Island Agricultural and Police Society; from 1856-1862 it was called the Beech Island Agricultural Club; from 1872-1873 the name is not certain (the minutes refer only to "the Club"); the 1874 minutes refer to it as the Beech Island Farmers' Club; and in 1885, 1886 and 1889 it is referred to as the 1885 Beech Island (S.C.) Farmers' Club.
