The collection contains a certificate, correspondence, a postcard and a program. The 1902 certificate is for registering a dog owned by B. Harris with the American Kennel Club. The correspondence is to James regarding arranging a meeting of the local chapter of the Alliance, remarks from a speaker who is unable to attend a meeting concerning cooperation among different regions of the state, a thank you from a friend for helping his daughter who is attending college in Rock Hill, SC and a letter encouraging James to sell insurance from the American Livestock Insurance Company. The postcard concerns beans for sale by the S. T. Dickson, Jr. & Company, and the program is for the South Carolina Live Stock Association’s third annual meeting at the Y.M.C.A. Hall in Columbia, SC on February 15-16, 1905.
W. A. (William Apollos) James was born on June 14, 1857 near Bishopville, SC, son of Benjamin Albert and Grace Ann (Bates) James and was educated in private schools. He married Lottie Lee Barr on April 21, 1886; they had six children. He served as Secretary of the Farmers’ State Alliance of South Carolina. James also established the Cooperative Grange Store in Bishopville and organized the Farmers’ Loan and Trust Company of Bishopville, serving as its president for twenty years. He was a state legislator (1913-1914) and active in the real estate and fire insurance businesses as well. James died August 18, 1930 in Bishopville.
