Nine diaries covering the period 1879-1889 in Ida Bradley's hand; and two volumes containing typed transcripts of the diaries: Volume I contains diaries I-V (1879-1882) and Volume II contains diaries VI-IX 1883-1889). Also in the collection is a summary of the diaries by the granddaughter of Ida Bradley, Mrs. Robert Holt (Claire Hardin Holt); a photograph of Ida Bradley; a genealogical chart of the Bradley Family; and some biographical information about David Franklin Bradley from the Biographical Directory of the Senate of South Carolina,1876-1964. The diaries record Ida Bradley's observations about daily life in Pickens, South Carolina; trips to Atlanta, New Orleans, and Cartersville, Georgia; and her life in Columbia, South Carolina as a clerk for her uncle. The diaries provide important information about social customs, religion, education, clothing styles and the status of women in upcountry South Carolina and Georgia.
Ida Virginia Bradley was born on May 23, 1861. She grew up in Cartersville, Georgia. In 1879 at the age of eighteen she went to live with her aunt and uncle in Pickens, South Carolina. She began her diaries in that year. In 1891 she married Charles Hovey Clyde; they had seven children, three of whom survived to adulthood.

Mabel Bradley Clyde Hardin, daughter of Ida Bradley, donated the diaries in 1988, accession 88-96. Her daughter Claire Hardin Holt donated the typed transcripts in 1992, accession 92-63.
