The papers include 14 letters from Elijah Webb Brown to his wife written during his service in the Confederate Army from 1861-1864 and one letter written in 1880. In addition, there are three other letters from family members and the United Daughters of the Confederacy certificate of Eula Brown Hart, which explains the participation of Elijah Webb Brown and other family members in the Civil War. Also included are fragments of rough draft of family history and a paper written by great grandaughter of E.W. Brown which includes typed copies of several additional letters written by Elijah Webb Brown during the Civil War.
Elijah Webb Brown (1839-1891) was a merchant of Anderson, South Carolina. He was married to Mary Frances "Mollie" Hubbard of Pendleton, South Carolina. Brown served in the Confederate Army and returned to Anderson after the Civil War. Following the war, his store was reorganized and named Bleckley, Brown and Fretwell. From 1889 until his death in 1891, the store was named E.W. Brown and Sons. Elijah Webb Brown was a member of the Pendleton Red Shirts.
