Scope and Contents

The Dan River, Inc. - Woodside Mills Records contain material documenting some of the activities of Woodside Mills and its parent company, Dan River, Inc. (Clifton Mills). The collection also documents the activities of Norris Mill and Easley Cotton Mills before they became a part of Woodside Mills.

The records consist of an "uncalled for tickets book for Woodside Mills (1903-1909); an unclaimed wage record book for Woodside Mills (1908-1949); an autobiography of John T. Woodside (1933-1934); stock certificates for Woodside Mills (1911-1919, 1935) and Norris Mill (1948-1959, 1963); minute books for meetings of the board of directors (1935-1948) and stockholders (1937-1948) of the Easley Cotton Mills; a list of unclaimed stock for Woodside Mills (1948); an inactive stock record book (1950-1962) and journal (1964-1966) for Woodside Mills; a wage payroll book for Clifton (1966-1969) and Woodside (1967-1969) Mills; and wage payroll summary sheets for the Woodside Division, 1970-1971.

Organizational History

Woodside Mills was founded by John T., Edward F. and Joel David Woodside in 1902, with the first mill in operation by 1903 in Greenville, South Carolina. Another mill was built in Simpsonville, South Carolina in 1908. Woodside Mills also acquired other South Carolina mills: Fountain Inn Mill in 1908, the Easley Cotton Mills in 1948, the Haynsworth Mill (Anderson) in 1951, and the Norris Mill (Cateechee) in 1959.

Woodside Mills was acquired by Dan River, Inc. of Danville, Virginia in 1956, and became part of Dan River's Greenville Group of mills in 1976. The Simpsonville mill was sold in 1980.

This collection consists primarily of records relating to Woodside Mills of Greenville, South Carolina, and records from other mills acquired by Woodside Mills from 1908 to 1959.

Arrangement

The records are arranged chronologically.

Provenance

The bulk of papers were donated by Dan River, Inc. in February, 1988. The autobiography of John T. Woodside was donated by Robert S. Small in February, 1986. The volume of stock certificates was donated by William Wallace in 1995.
