Abstract

This series consists primarily of black-and-white photographs documenting the political life of United States Senator Strom Thurmond. The Photographs Series document Strom Thurmond's early years, his family and careers. These are photographs of Strom Thurmond as a baby, his parents, his siblings, as well as the Edgefield home where he was raised. There are also photographs documenting his rise in public life, showing Thurmond as a college student, teacher and coach, state senator, circuit judge, an officer serving in World War II, Governor of South Carolina, and United States Senator. Photographs of Strom Thurmond with his first wife, Jean Crouch Thurmond, including their wedding at the Executive Mansion in 1947, are filed in this series. There are a number of photographs of Thurmond with his second wife, Nancy Moore Thurmond, and their four children: Nancy Moore Thurmond, Strom Thurmond, Jr., Juliana ("Julie") Gertrude Thurmond, and Paul Reynolds Thurmond.

Arrangement

Primarily arranged chronologically by year. Until July 2011, Subseries A contained two box 7s and two box 8s with folder numbers 36-50 duplicated. In order to facilitate reference, the duplicated boxes were relabeled as 7, 7A, 7B and 8 and folders were relabeled as 48A-O. Image numbers and order remain the same.
