Corporate History

This Spartanburg, S.C. firm was incorporated in 1938 but remained dormant until 1940 when it began broadcasting operations with its radio station, WORD. The firm also acquired rival Spartanburg radio station WSPA in 1940. After having sold WORD in December 1944, Spartanburg Advertising Company was bought by the Hipp family-controlled Surety Broadcasting Company in 1947. Spartanburg Advertising Company was officially dissolved as a corporation in 1949.
