Abstract

The material in the Strom Thurmond Collection Gubernatorial Series includes correspondence (both official and personal), campaign material, speeches and other items documenting Strom Thurmond's term as Governor of South Carolina from 1946-1951. Some of this material was originally part of the holdings of the South Caroliniana Library of The University of South Carolina and the South Carolina Department of Archives and History.

Scope and Content Note The Jean Crouch Thurmond series primarily covers the period 1947-1960, from her courtship with Governor Thurmond to her death. The records are divided into five subseries: Wedding Correspondence, General Correspondence, General Subject File, Illness/Sympathy, and three oversize volumes of Scrapbooks. Scope and Content Note The first subseries, Active Service (Subseries A, 1942-1945; 1.8 cu. ft.), contains the records concerning Thurmond's duties and responsibilities in the Civil Affairs Division during World War II. The division's mission was to occupy, govern, and to help restore devastated, war-torn countries and their economies, and usually arrived during large-scale combat operations.
