Biographical Note

Richard Wright Simpson Jr. was born on October 18, 1874 in Pendleton, SC, the son of Colonel Richard Wright and Maria Louise Garlington Simpson. He married Lillian Aubrey Fletcher (1890-1940) on May 30, 1914 and they had a daughter: Lucy Ann (1920-1956). Simpson was editor of the Greenville (SC) News. He was then with the Associated Press in New York and later in Washington, DC as a White House correspondent during the Wilson, Harding, and Coolidge administrations. After that he was an editor in Norfolk, VA until he became managing editor (1925-1943) and later news director (1944-1946) of the Tampa (FL) Tribune. Simpson died in Pasadena, CA on May 30, 1953.
